One of Yangshuo’s most famous attractions is the limestone Moon Hill named for its crescent-shaped hole penetrating the hill.

Located about 8km away from the city, the hill is 230m tall and 410m wide making it a challenging climb, but well worth the effort as the views from the top are breathtaking. Over 800 stone steps lead to the 50m wide moon-shaped cave. Once you reach the top, the entire Li River valley unfolds before you.

A local legend speaks of two immortals who lived in a palace on the moon, the beautiful Jade Rabbit and Wu Gang, the woodcutter. They appeared in the form of spots on the moon’s surface. And if your guide is familiar with this ancient legend, he or she might be able to point out rock carvings of the rabbit and woodcutter on the hill.
