“Our students and teachers have evaluated our trip to China to be extremely positive. It was a full but relevant programme with highly competent guides and serviceminded busdrivers. In the planning Albatros was very flexible and co-operative. It was a great success travelling with Albatros in China.”

The capital of Shaanxi province and the imperial capital for eleven dynasties, Xi'an is suffused with history and culture.

The first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang (221 B.C.), united seven states into one country and ruled the unified empire from Xi'an. The city remained the imperial capital for eleven dynasties and the city also marked the beginning of the Silk Road. Since the early Tang dynasty, Xi'an has had great impact on Chinese culture and is a cultural melting pot located in the centre of the country between the eastern and western provinces of China.

With wide streets and plenty of bike lanes, cycling in Xi'an is an enjoyable way of seeing the city.

Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Xi'an. Visit the Grand Mosque and the Muslim Quarter.Meals: L D

Upon arrival, our guide and driver will pick you up and take you to your hotel in downtown to check in, we'll spend the afternoon visiting one of Xi'an's oldest neighbourhood and visit one of the most impressive and largest mosques in China.

The mosque was built during the Tang dynasty (742 A.D.) and has since been renovated and enlarged many times to its present size of more than 13.000m². Tucked away in the Muslim Quarter, we'll have ample opportunity of exploring the bazaar after dinner at a local restaurant.. Wandering around the lively streets and alleyways of the Muslim Quarter is the perfect way of ending the day. Be enticed by fresh spices and local delicacies, pick up gifts to bring home or just soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the evening stroll.

Day 2: Explore a traditional medicine market and the Terracotta Army.Meals: B L D

After breakfast we'll visit a large medicine market for traditional Chinese medicine. Farmers from far and near come to this market to sell dried roots and plants used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Next stop is the impressive Terracotta Army on the outskirts of Xi’an. In 1974, a Chinese farmer accidentally found some of the terracotta soldiers when digging a well. Since 1974, archaeologists have dug out thousands of terracotta soldiers, horses and chariots and the excavations are still on-going more than 30 years after the first finds. The army was built and covered with soil to accompany and protect the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, in the after world.

After dinner we will go to a local theatre to watch a performance unique to Xi’an, the Tang Dynasty Show, a reproduction of the shows the emperors enjoyed during imperial times.

Day 3: Tai chi in a nearby park and a bike ride on the city wall. Farewell Xi'an.Meals: B L

Before breakfast, we'll visit a nearby park for a lesson in tai chi. It's best to practise on a light stomach so we'll have breakfast after our tai chi lesson.

After breakfast we will go for a walk or bike ride on Xi’an’s impressive city wall that encircles the old city centre of Xi’an. Biking on the wall is a great way of covering a lot of ground and enjoying the views atop the ancient fortification. After the city wall, we'll head to the airport or train station.

* Onward flight from Xi'an is not included in the price. We are happy to help if you need a flight to another destination in China.
