From the vast plains of remote Tibet to the packed beaches on tropical Hainan island, from the tranquil karst landscape of Guilin to the formidable Forbidden City, China holds a pervasive allure.

China offers visitors an incredibly broad and varied experience. Huge megacities such as Chongqing and Shanghai are on a fast-track to sky-scrapered modernity, while farmers are still tending the stunning rice terraces in Longsheng. China is a land of contrasts. A 5,000-year-old civilisation, China's history is rich and tumultous. It was one of the world's earliest civilisations and thrived in the fertile basin of the Yellow River, marking the start of the first of many dynasties, the Xia and Shang dynasties. The dynastic period ended with the fall of the Qing dynasty in 1911 and the Republic of China was founded. It ruled China until 1949 when the Communist regime took over.
